Protest at Eagle Elementary School Sunday to Oppose Construction of Cell Tower Near Bethlehem Central Schools
Who:
Parents, students, Bethlehem homeowners, community leaders and concerned residents
What:
Town residents will be holding a protest in front of Eagle Elementary School in the Town of Bethlehem to voice their strong opposition to the construction of a cell tower only a few hundred feet from two district schools.
Town residents will then proceed to distribute “Red Warning” balloons throughout adjacent neighborhoods to raise community awareness to the danger to children caused by cell towers, their negative impact on property values, and the anger with elected town officials who have been silent on this issue.
When:
Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Where:
In front of Eagle Elementary School, 27 Van Dyke Road, Delmar, NY 12054
(across from Bethlehem Central High School)
Why:
The Town of Bethlehem Planning Board is in the process of allowing a large microwave emitting cell tower to be constructed adjacent to Eagle Elementary School and the Bethlehem High School and have not taken into account the recent opposition by community residents to the placement of such devices near schools.
In the Fall of 2009, parents and town residents successfully blocked attempts to cell towers on three elementary schools in the Bethlehem Central School District. Community residents are concerned with the lack of feed back by town officials and the silence of Town of Bethlehem Board members on this issue.
The Planning Board is scheduled to take a vote on construction of cell tower on February 15, 2011. The Town, which is facing tough financial decisions, by approving the cell tower construction, will actually be allowing a private landowner to make as much as $100,000 per year from fees paid by cell phone companies to lease the tower, instead of placing the tower on Town owned land and collecting that revenue for the Town of Bethlehem services.
